Thanksgiving in Annapolis

We had a great Thanksgiving week in Annapolis. The weekend before, we were able to see Aunt Courtney Peterson complete a 50 MILE race in Maryland - way to go, Aunt Courtney!

On Thanksgiving Day, we were with the Grays, and the girls and boys split up and Susan/Nana, Aunt Kristen, Aunt Emily and I headed over to a Turkey Trot to start the day. It was a pretty cool and rainy day, but we had a great time walking and talking together - and earning our Thanksgiving indulgence.

Kevin went off to join his high school friends for their annual Turkey Bowl. I don't know where he got his nickname, but I do find it ironic that he is one of the only (if not the only) of these guys to have a child.

The ironic nickname.

Rick/Grandpa brought Michael to cheer on Kevin's team! Michael was a hit.

And here is the little guy himself in a sweet sweater vest - I love the preppiness.

Finally, here are a couple pictures of Michael greeting the day - and everyone in our parking lot. If I crack open the sliding door that leads to our deck, he will stand post and squawk at anyone walking by (syllables like "BA" and "DA" over and over again). It's pretty hilarious.

Happy Lion Day

Our photo shoot for Halloween started off so innocently. Michael was wearing his cowboy hat from the Mallares and getting a kick out of Mommy laughing at (with) him.

The Fake Laugh

Michael has a fake laugh... and a fake cry. One is a lot cuter - I'll let you see which one is pretty precious.

Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday to the sweetest little boy, whose smile and laugh light up the room, and whose kindness and sense of adventure amuse all of those who love him. Michael Lukens Peterson, we love you!

Some of the gifts you received for your first birthday include:
A nice dinner from Mimi and Doc...

Birthday wishes from the Petersons...

A car...

A hammer...

An unintentionally Elmo-themed birthday cookout at the Grays with an Elmo cell phone and an Elmo pinata...

And the ability to fake-laugh.

Even though you didn't like the cake, we enjoyed it for you!

Happy Baptism too, my love. The ratio of adults to kids was definitely in your favor this time!

Jesus does love you, and so do the Redskins for being their lucky charm!

I will also mention that you are now 31 1/4 inches long, and officially half of your mother's height at one year old. Congratulations, Shaq... with love, the Lollipop Guild.

MOMMY

Michael is exiting his mommy phase slowly (yippee!), but he still has times where being close to me is the only way that he will not cry.

Example #1,142: When Kristen was doing my make-up for Greg and Jess's wedding this past weekend.

hilarious.

Visiting San Antonio

Michael and I had a great trip down to see Mimi and Doc in San Antonio. It was such a RELAXING week, and one where I was able to rejoice in Michael losing some of his "mommy clinginess." As Kevin and I have talked about, he sporadically clings to me with desperate force one day ---- and the next he is happy as can be crawling on strangers on the airplane!

Speaking of airplanes, Michael wooed every other passenger in the seats around us on both legs of the flight. I was wondering how he would do in a confined space for 3.5 hours, but I forgot that we would have the benefit of 100 strangers around us to entertain my people-happy son. He was playing hide and seek with the people in the row behind us, he was crawling over the patient and loving people in my row, he was smiling at every stewardess... so much so that at the end of the flight, people would come up to me and ask to meet him because, "he was such a good baby!"

Here are some pictures of the time together. What a wonderful trip (though we missed Kevin a lot).

Everyday activities were so fun to do together, like reading...

analyzing the politics of Southern Texas with Doc...

and finally, the only activity that will make Michael sit in your lap, watching Sesame Street!

Photo shoot

This outfit is from Mimi and Doc and... I couldn't resist a photo shoot. The crabs reminded them of Maryland. None of these poses were intentional (clearly).

New country, new language, new food - Viva Italia!

My brother Paul stopped by on his way back to Texas to check in, give hugs and drink some wine with me and Kevin before he heads on to a 3-month adventure in Italy! Paul will be learning about sustainable farming - and by "learning," I mean, digging his hands into the ground and fertilizing the crops and harvesting them when ripe. Yep, my brother will be a farmer for a season in one of the most beautiful places in the world - the Tuscan region in Italy.

We are PROUD of him for getting into this competitive program and excited to partake of his knowledge (literally) when he returns.

It's a girl - I can't believe it!

So my dear friend Belen had a baby GIRL last night, and I am thrilled. Belen is a natural romantic at heart, and I can just see her setting tea parties, tying bows, inventing romances, reading Anne of Green Gables, and twirling with Elena Jayne Jonker.

Cause for Celebration!

This past weekend, the Grays treated us to a *magnificent* dinner out to celebrate Emily's graduation and move to East Carolina University as well and Kevin's and my 2-year anniversary. It was a memorable night with amazing food and great conversations, and we felt very... celebrated!

In Loving Memory

This week, we have had the gift of remembering and celebrating the life of Grandma/Nonnie Peterson, or Gertrude Dowd Peterson, who passed away last week. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and we will always be grateful for her quick smile, her gracious love, her contagious giggles, and her endless kindness.

We love you, Grandma, and we will miss you.

From Peterson Family Get-Together

"I am."

From Diana Gabaldon's book, Dragonfly in Amber:

"Babies are soft. Anyone looking at them can see the tender, fragile skin and know it for the rose-leaf softness that invites a finger's touch. But when you live with them and love them, you feel the softness going inward, the round-cheeked flesh wobbly as custard, the boneless splay of the tiny hands. Their joints are melted rubber, and even when you kiss them hard, in the passion of loving their existence, your lips sink down and seem never to find bone. Holding them against you, they melt and mold, as though they might at any moment flow back into your body.

But from the very start, there is that small streak of steel within each child. That thing that says "I am," and forms the core of personality. In the second year, the bone hardens and the child stands upright, skull wide and solid, a helmet protecting the softness within. And "I am" grows, too. Looking at them, you can almost see it, sturdy as heartwood, glowing through the translucent flesh.

The bones of the face emerge at six, and the soul within is fixed at seven. The process of encapsulation goes on, to reach its peak in the glossy shell of adolescence, when all softness then is hidden under the nacreous layers of the multiple new personalities that teenagers try on to guard themselves.

In the next years, the hardening spreads from the center, as one finds and fixes the facets of the soul, until "I am" is set, delicate and detailed as an insect in amber."

"I am."
